When I started my first business in 2010, I felt so excited. I had my plan, a shiny website and some sweet business cards. I found some local business networking events and went armed with my business cards, and a 50 second pitch filled with all the features and benefits of my stuff.
I was ready to sell baby!
I told them all about my stuff, all the features and benefits … and nothing. I felt crushed… and every time I did my pitch, and nothing happened a bit more of my confidence got chipped away.
I went on some sales training, to try and fix it. After that I started using all the techniques, asking questions, magnifying their pain, soft closes… and then the hard close, and although it got me a couple of customers, it felt kind of sleazy and pushy.
Six months on I had just a handful of clients… and they weren’t people I really wanted to work with. I was sad, frightened and frustrated, I knew that my savings from leaving corporate were running out and there wasn't enough coming in...and I realised my dream of having more freedom to be with my daughter and doing what I was passionate about was slipping away. Then I got a call from an old boss offering me a job…I didn’t want to go back to the corporate world…but I felt scared and like I just couldn’t get through to people, so I said yes, and felt like a failure.
Just after I went back to a 9-5 job, I went to a business conference and it was there, listening to the platform speakers who had people rushing to the back of the room, that I discovered the secret to pitching and selling... and that is using hooks and stories. I was upset that this hadn't come before I'd given up, but it fired me up to try again. I spent the next few years studying storytelling, marketing, influencing and sales, and using these skills working on the side, because I knew that when I left corporate the next time...it would be for good and I was determined not to fail again... and this time round...I made 10x in my first month what I made in the six months I'd had my business before.
So many people end up settling for less… lowering their expectations of themselves and their business, or even giving up like I did, because they can’t get their message heard and actioned upon by the right people. The people who will love what they have to offer.
That’s because they don’t understand the journey that they have to take their buyer on, and how to use their pitch to connect powerfully with their target customer’s problem and pain.
